Kingston's veterans agent recounted a $500,000 benefits win and warned seniors about billing scams at the Sept. 8 Council on Aging Advisory Board meeting. Veterans Services Officer Sarah Lansing, who serves Kingston and Duxbury, said her largest-ever claim secured a Kingston widow of a Vietnam veteran more than half a million dollars in tax-free VA back pay, telling her to "spend it on yourself." She also cautioned about a 90-year-old Pembroke veteran billed for VA hearing aids, urging the family to confirm the charge in person rather than by mail. Friends of the Kingston Council on Aging officer Mary Hayes reported the nonprofit has contributed more than $5,000 toward senior center programming this year, funded by $10-$15 dues and a gift shop that sold 88 of 100 printed cookbooks.
The center's director reported 1,463 August check-ins, 376 van rides, 455 cafe meals, and a Sept. 19 Old Home Day tied to Kingston's 300th anniversary.
